Gen. Petraeus: "I don't know if Iraq war helps stop terror"

It was September 11, 2007, General Petraeus was testifying at the Senate Armed Services Committee, when asked by Senator Warner on whether pressing ahead on the war “is making America safer”, the General answered, “Sir, I don’t know, actually”.

In a prime-time national address tomorrow, Bush was expected to accept Petraeus’ recommendation to withdraw 30,000 troops by next July.

Despite the expected troop reductions, Republicans continued to back away from the Bush policy. Rep. James Walsh (R-Syracuse), who nearly lost his seat over his support of the war last year, said, “I believe it is time to start bringing our troops home.”
