I've been kind of agnostic about Assange and about what wikileaks does or doens't do. But I am deeply disturbed by the way commercial interests and American corporations are falling in line with their government's wishes.

Of course governments will complain - they are embarrassed. But for Amazon and PayPal and all those servers around the world to be pulling down the site (even Switzerland!) - that's deeply disturbing.

I posted some days ago my own theory about why htis is all happening now - Assange announced just after the diplomatic document dump that the next target was major US banks. And then the fun began . . .

They're terrified of shining any light on bank behavior.

Maybe a good thing ....

We NEED transparency as part of a proper steering mechanism to survive the global society we created with technology.
At this moment our society has an obsolete 200 years old steering mechanism with to many crisses. How can a few wise people understand these complex global issues pending ?

Would we have gone to Iraq over Weapons of mass destruction is we were part of the diplomatic cable discussion ?
Better of with more transparency ? Credit Crises / Cable gate shows governments are not so much in control of the global society.
Wasn't it work of the press to tell us the truth ?

At least the cork out of the bottle. Fact is that secrets are harder to keep anno 2010.
Shutting down is naive. Discuss it is the only option.. Come on free press, have vision ..take the lead.

You have what it takes to be courageous, Mr. Idris. Can Pakitan get rid of its corrupt politicians and terrorist mullahs? Can you envision a Pakistan government, judiciary, police and education system that ensures it does not does deserve the wrath of nations and the curse of its people?
Thank the Lord, the Indians have not walked into Pakistan, yet. But, who would want to?
Rebuilding, yes. wih the same old mullah and politicians, NO!
Some weeks ago the debate was on the wanton massacre of Ahmadis. But now, we should plan on rebuilding the country after the hey day of the mullah ended in the wrath of Allah and the wrath of nations.
The silver lining in the monsoon clouds is more than a glimmer of hope. God cleaned the country from the north to the south, east to the west of the sin of mullahism.
Rebuild Pakitan without the mullah, without the madrassas, with a better army that can pull the trigger before the mullah butchers people in worship, a better police than the one that dances around only to pick up fatalities, with a judiciary that will hang the first mullah who incited peope to murder and a people who will no longer tolerate abuse of minorities.
At time like this, we should forget the past? This is only chance that country will ever have to be a state in the comity of nations. If Pakistani mullahs are to be tolerated in Europe, America and elsewhere, let them take note that only secularism guarantees freedom, not mullaism. This is what happens to mullaism.

Personally I find out behavior in Afghanistan troubling, especially the unmanned drones. I wrote an article about them- they are at best questionable under international law, and at worst they are non-military assassination machines. My article is here, if you're interested:
